Southern Pines

   Southern Pines is a special place offering a great variety of style, character, and

recreational opportunities for those who enjoy an eclectic, outgoing lifestyle. It’s dynamic downtown masterfully blends old with new, trendy with traditional.

   A variety of home styles from modern, upscale condos to American Craftsman-styled bungalows line the streets of the downtown area. Yet there are a variety of developments with a range of single-family homes as well as large tracts that offer considerable acreage ideal for raising horses.

   While golf is a big draw for Moore County and excellent courses, such as Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club, host to several U.S. Women’s Open Championships, are located within its boundaries, Southern Pines ultimately is a haven for horse-lovers and equestrians.

   The heart of the second-largest municipality in Moore County though is its downtown.

   With an active Amtrak depot, downtown Southern Pines’ main drag, Broad Street, is divided north and south by tree-lined railroad tracks. Along this main, scenic corridor are interesting and vibrant restaurants, retail shops, and boutiques that reside in handsome structures built, primarily, from the late 1800s through the 1920s. One of those structures, built in 1898 became a movie theater in the 1940s and operated for 40 years. Through community efforts the theater was reborn as Sunrise Cinema. The theater presents weekly showings of first-run and independent films and plays host to a variety of community events.

   Beyond its downtown, Southern Pines also has several shopping plazas, many of them upscale, including Pinecrest Plaza, that feature grocery stores, retail shops, restaurants, and a multiplex cinema.

   Southern Pines is a great town for those with an active lifestyle and who enjoy the outdoors.

   The town provides many parks, including Reservoir Park, with a 95-acre lake at its core, that is ideal for walking, riding, biking, fishing, and boating. Other parks throughout Southern Pines feature sports fields and courts for basketball, baseball, tennis, and volleyball. Related to the parks is the town’s greenway system, which wends its way through forested areas ideal for runners, bicyclers, and hikers.

   Employers include Ingersoll Rand, Trident Marketing, Southern Software, and Longworth Industries.
